RE: FLIC’s Response to Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd’s Statement Threatening Arrests at Hurricane Irma Evacuation Shelters

Dear Governor Scott:

As our families and communities prepare for the imminent landfall of Hurricane Irma, the
Florida Immigrant Coalition wants to ensure that all Florida residents regardless of their
country of origin or immigration status will be safe and supported in this moment.

Florida has many vulnerable populations who may fear seeking much needed assistance and support because they may lack forms of identification.

Yesterday, a statement was made by Sheriff Grady Judd of Polk County that identification will be checked at evacuation shelters. These sort of statements will discourage and put at risk the lives of many seeking shelter, emergency assistance and resources.

This is not a moment to incite fear in the hearts of our communities, this is a moment where we should be coming together as Floridians to ensure the safety of our loved ones and neighbors.

We, the Florida Immigrant Coalition, ask that you make an official statement to assure
Floridians that they will be safe wherever they should seek shelter. We need our communities to feel loved and protected. We ask that you make it clear, that all Floridians regardless of their immigration status or country of origin will not be discriminated against, but will be receive the support and emergency assistance they may need
