Miami, FL – In response to the principles for Immigration Reform released today by the GOP, below is a statement from Maria Rodriguez, Executive Director for the Florida Immigrant Coalition:
“We were hopeful that the House leadership’s immigration principles would bring us closer to Immigration Reform. But after months and months of debate, where nearly everyone in the country has acknowledged that our immigration system is broken because it is tearing apart American families, the House released a set of principles to immigration reform that prioritizes the separation of more families before they can keep any of us together.
The reality is that we need to fix our broken immigration system before we get to the point where none of our families will be here to benefit from reform. But even with the best of intentions, the principles released today just represent more words and statements to communities who have grown tired of both.
We feel encouraged that both Congress and the President, Republicans and Democrats, are talking about Immigration Reform again. But for the past several years, every time our communities get excited at some groundbreaking speech by the President or Congress, we are only left with more broken promises and thousands more of our families torn apart.
Until we see a bill from the House, a statement on immigration is still just talk. Until the President uses the power the constitution gives him to stop the deportation of our family members, any speech he gives is just talk. And talking won’t keep any of our families together. We sincerely hope that our President and our Congress can fix the immigration system they helped to break.”
