Florida’s first Anti-immigrant Bill of the Year Passes initial Hearing

In response to the passing of Senate Bill 120 in the Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday, January 24th, Francesca Menes, Policy and Advocacy Director stated:

“It’s disappointing to continue to see these attacks on immigrants. SB 120 aims to criminalize a community by enhancing criminal offenses committed by undocumented immigrants. Increasing penalties solely based on a person’s immigration status is wrong and would open Florida to litigation. Florida has a history of passing unconstitutional laws and as a result wasting taxpayers dollars.

It’s not coincidence that SB 120 moved forward on the same week that the Trump administration announced that they will only focus on immigrants with criminal records.

We urge Congress to take real steps to address our outdated immigration system to one that reflects and celebrates the diversity of our nation.”
